Awiqli, a long-acting insulin preparation that lasts for a week

30/01/2025

Awiqli, a long-acting insulin preparation that lasts for a week, went on sale on 30th January.

Novo Nordisk Pharma rolled out Awiqli (insulin icodec) on January 30, making the world’s first once-weekly basal insulin available for Japanese patients with diabetes requiring insulin therapy.

It will be a game changer, especially in home medical care .

While insulin Degludec required daily subcutaneous injections, insulin Icodec can be given once a week, which is good news for older patients.
For those of us managing type1 diabetes, reducing daily basal injections to once a week is pretty revolutionary. It could mean fewer injections, potentially simplifying the treatment regimen and possibly improving adherence.
However, from today onwards, patients will be required to visit the hospital every two weeks for one year.
