Amiodarone-induced thyroiditis

What is AIT ?

Amiodarone-induced thyroiditis is a condition that can occur as a side effect of taking the medication amiodarone, which is commonly used to treat heart rhythm abnormalities. There are two main types of amiodarone-induced thyroiditis:

1. Type 1 amiodarone-induced thyroiditis: This is subacute thyroiditis that occurs due to an inflammatory reaction in the thyroid gland. It typically presents with symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) followed by symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) as the condition progresses.

2. Type 2 amiodarone-induced thyroiditis: This is a destructive condition that leads to hypothyroidism and is thought to be caused by the direct toxic effect of amiodarone on the thyroid gland.

Amiodarone-induced thyroiditis can be challenging to manage and may require close monitoring and treatment by doctors. It is important for patients taking amiodarone to be aware of the potential side effects on the thyroid gland and to report any symptoms to their doctors.
